The 20th century
The End of the First Republic

Based on the blueprint of the city of Leiria done in 1918-1919 by Lieutenant Colonel Alexandre Baptista da Costa Pereira, two proposals were presented after tender: one from the architect Cristino da Silva and another from the architect Fernando Santa-Rita. Neither of these studies had a formal approval according to the president of the competition Ernesto Korrodi. However, the City Hall accepted both plans since they complemented each other, thus serving as a basis for some future interventions, such as the demolition of the building behind D. Maria Theatre, the opening of Rua Dr. Correia Mateus and the alteration onto Rua Dr. António da Costa.
