The stately city

The graphic representations of the city of Leiria are scarce for the modern era. Among these we highlight the image of Leiria included in a small book of prints of Portuguese cities from the 17th century and, from mid-16th century, the oldest known iconography of the city of Leiria, recognisable on the Calvary of the Triptych of the Church of S. Francisco, on display at the Leiria Museum. In the first depiction, the presence of the Cathedral, a church-hall of plain architecture, as sober as it is imposing, reflects the importance of this building, together with the Episcopal Palace, located on the upper level of the platform of the intramural citadel. The existence of a tower attached to the keep on the highest platform is of particular significance. Although there are distortions on this image, it allows a view of the city in the 17th century.
