The arrival of new peoples from central and eastern Europe change the current reality during the Roman age. A new structure of settlement begins to emerge. The traces of this period in Leiria are scarce, as if no one was ever here but the area can still hide in its entrails the memories of these peoples. Not far away, in the municipality of Nazaré, there can be found the temple of S. Gião, of Visigoth influence, currently undergoing a process of conservation and restauration. There are a lot of differences between the world of northern Europe and that of the urban world brought by the Arabs to the Iberian Peninsula. In the cities of the south, people from different religions, Muslims, Jews and Christians, lived together and new commercial routes between the different populated areas were established. In Leiria the material remains of this time are very few, however ceramics with Muslims traits were found on the Leiria Castle hill and there are still several toponyms of Arabic origin along this area.
