The 20th century
A New Urban Growth

In 1947 the city already shows signs of its future expansion, specifically with the industrial growth to the north, on the right bank of the river, where some companies are located, such as: Indústrias Reunidas, Fábrica Condestável de Gesso, later Cerâmica Irmãos Kunz, Cerâmica do Lis and Plásticos Santo António. Av. Marquês de Pombal is already open and Av. Henrique Sommer, in the Bairro do Centro Hípico, gets its first buildings. Downtown Leiria cements its growth along Av. dos Combatentes and the city will start an expansion process with the appearance of the Bairro da Restauração (Largo Rainha Santa Isabel, Rua João XXI and Rua Dr. Manuel Magalhães Pessoa) and the settlement of Av. José Jardim. Ten years later the Municipal Stadium and the Bairro Social das Almoinhas, open in August 1950, are built and the southern expansion of the city is marked by the demolition of part of the “Praça de Touros” (the Bullring) and the beginning of the Av. N.ª Sr.ª de Fátima expansion.
