Held in 1977 the exhibition “O Saque da Cidade de Leiria” is the first public manifestation of a new conscience, resulting on one hand from the establishment of a new democratic regime and on the other hand from a cultural reaction to the deregulation caused by real estate interests. Like any other city, Leiria was starting a development cycle based on urban growth driven by capital accumulated through immigration and easy access by the economic agents to credit and also by the population looking for housing. This cycle prolongs itself throughout the 80’s and 90’s and will come to configure the city’s biggest urban sprawl, occupying with allotment procedures all the old farms and crofts that surrounded the city in the 1950’s.
